Hits vs Page View vs Visits, The Simple Stats.

A simple description of the three big stats when it comes to websites; Hits, page views and visits.

Imagine you have a web site with two pages, both pages containing text and 3 images.

If someone comes opens the home page, clicks to the second page and then leaves you will have;

  1. 1 visit
  2. 2 page views
  3. 8 Hits

They have visited the website and no matter how many pages they look at, it is one visit until the session is closed. Sessions are usually ended by the user closing the browser or clicking through to another website.

During that visit they viewed two pages, the home page as one and then the second page.

Each page records 4 hits, the 3 images plus the HTML page containing the images and text. The server has produced 4 files in total for the home page, but because they opened the second page that also contains 3 images and another HTML page, that adds another 4 hits.

Facebook linking, show the right stuff

When you post a link in Facebook, FB looks for three elements for the display of the link. Title, description and an image.

The title comes from the <title>This is my Link</title> tag.

The description similarly comes from the META tag <meta name=”description” content=”The Description” />

The image basically looks at all the images on the page over 100 px, and then sorts it by the largest image first, and then position. The image can also have a style display of none so that it is hidden from the browser, but visible to FB.

Great Twitter idea, no execution

Here is a great example of a great Twitter business tool, but with no execution.

The Hills M2 Motorway is not the cheapest so when you pay almost $5 then sit in road works traffic is suck big time. When it’s clear I think it’s worth the money, considering fuel usage etc. Which makes this use of Twitter pretty cool, but if you don’t tell anyone about it, who going to follow?

The M2 even has signs up on the motorway to direct them to the website, but why not use Twitter as the call to action instead? Of course people will say “But I don’t have Twitter”, but people will still find their website anyway.

Seriously hanging out for District 9

I am seriously hanging out for this movie which is basically a sci-fi mockumentary from Neill Blomkamp and Lord of the Ring’s Peter Jackson.

This is IGN review which is great, and even Margaret from ABC’s At the Movies has giving it 4.5 stars.

I espacially love the angle they have put on the marking of the film, particularly in digital. Check out the website: http://www.d-9.com/

Now this is how you do an online magazine

Holden Online MagazineHolden have a very nice online magazine which is an extension of their EDM’s. Many fail at online magazines by trying to make them look like a magazine, graphical page turners for example and they come out just looking tacky.

It doesn’t need to look like a magazine, it just needs to be readable like a mag.

Holden have done this very nicely by keeping is easy to use but also having the big glossy images and not overflowing with copy your never going to read.

Google Apps, gmail with your domain

googleappsThis is a big saver for anyone doing a campaign or a small website for anyone who wants email as well but you don’ want to setup your own email server or pay for another one.

Google apps give you an mail server with 7GB of space per user and up to 50 users in the standard free version. Plenty of space, and the easy of GMail. Then you also get GTalk chat, calendar, sites and Google Docs all connected to your own domain. Sweet!

Works nicely on the mobile to.

There is a bit of setup with the domain, chaging or adding MX records and CNAME records, but if you have control of the DNS for your domain, like through Domain Central then you can convert a domain over within the hour.

I’ve just converted all my domains over!!

Domain.com.au improved refine search criteria

domain_refine_search

I really like www.domain.com.au new refine search function. It is completely reactive to the data on the screen.

Their old method was selecting how many bedroom or more, now you can checkbox exactly how many you want. Which is cool but besides that it will only show you options that are relevant to the current data. In other words, if there are no 1 bedders, then 1 bedroom is not an option.

Easier to use, and most importantly, it is neat and works sharp. No useless graphical crap, nice and quick.
